5B News

June 19 – 23

In Our Subjects:

LA

Students must complete their final novel this year. We do not have a theme, but rather students can choose from any of the Lit. Circle books from this year. The assignment with this novel is to be completed when they are done reading; students are to either write a summary of the book or a well-written What Happened/My Thinking.
For writing, students are working on a final writing piece. Some students are writing a story while others are doing a research paper. The focus will be on writing in proper sentences and paragraphs, using correct grammar and spelling.

Spelling – we are done :)

Math

We will be finishing our short unit on Graphing and Probability this week. Students will continue to work on Mental Math as well.

T.U.S.C.

This Thursday is our last scheduled T.U.S.C. for the year. Next week Tuesday, we will be our final T.U.S.C. where students can choose which role they would like to be. Students must let me know the role they would like to do by Friday.

Slurpee Run 

On Friday afternoon I will be taking the students to 7-Eleven to treat them to a Slurpee. (Students are not to bring money.)

Class Party

We will be having our class party next week Wednesday. I will have students sign up to bring food and will share that in next weeks Newsletter. If there is something specific you would like your child to bring, please let me know by the end of this week.

Track & Field

Is on Friday. Students need to come dressed for the weather. Students should bring a water bottle, hat and sunscreen along. We will be back in the school for lunch.

In Our Subjects:

Spelling – Week 30 – test on THURSDAY

Math

We will be finishing our unit on Measurement – looking at perimeter, area, volume, capacity, and mass. Our last unit for the year will be on Data Analysis – looking at graphing and probability.

Students will continue to work on Mental Math each week.

Unit Studies
Students will be finishing a Social Studies project this week and then we will be moving on to Activity Cards.

Our Health Talk will be on Friday, June 9. A letter was sent home a week ago informing parents about this. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Students need to come to school prepared with a devotional and prepared to pray with the class. Devotions can come from a book, something they find online, or they can make up their own devotions.

The books are: Wave, We All Fall Down, Walking Home, I Am A  Taxi, Breadwinner, Sign of the Beaver, Esperanza Rising, and War Horse. Students will have their final journal entry due this week. Students will also be working on a Talk Show activity in class.

We will be completing our unit on Shapes and Transformations this week. We will then be starting a unit on Measurement.

Students will continue to work on Mental Math each week.

We are continuing a thematic unit in Literature Circles on Historical Fiction. The books are: Wave, We All Fall Down, Walking Home, I Am A  Taxi, Breadwinner, Sign of the Beaver, Esperanza Rising, and War Horse. Students will have one journal entry due this week, with the book and final entry due next week. Students will also be working on a Talk Show activity in class.

Spelling – Week 26

Math

We will be continuing a unit on 2-D and 3D shapes – looking at vertical and horizontal lines, parallel and perpendicular lines, and quadrilaterals. We will also be looking at transformations (translations, rotation, reflection).

Students will continue to work on Mental Math each week.

Science
We will be continuing in our unit on the Human Body. We will be looking at nutrition and healthy diet. Students are asked to bring in a food nutrition label from a box or bag for Wednesday.

Social Studies

We will be continuing our unit on the Fur Trade.

We will be continuing in our unit on the Human Body. We will be looking at all of the major systems of the body: Circulatory, Respiratory, Skeletal, Muscular, Digestive, and Nervous systems.

Social Studies

We will be starting our unit on the Fur Trade.
